Interim officers to lead art society on into the new year
Horowhenua Art Society members have appointed an interim president and vice-president to see out the remainder of the year after members voted to give the old committee the heave-ho. More than 40 members attended the Special General Meeting of Horowhenua Arts Society (HARTS) last month, which saw the existing committee replaced in an unanimous vote. The society was remaining tight-lipped about the exact reasons why the committee were replaced mid-year, only to say it followed a period of “concern and disquiet”. When pressed for answers, HARTS interim president Vicky Webster and vicepresident Bernard Long refused to comment, only to say they wanted to focus on the future. “It’s all behind us and we look forward to encouraging the vibrant creative environment the society is so well known for,” Webster said. The next Annual General Meeting for HARTS is in March next year and Webster said, all going well, she would stand for president again. Webster said HARTS was a place to stimulate and encourage people of all ages and provide an outlet where anyone could learn more and express themselves through the medium of art. “I am so passionate about the society. Art has offered me so much and there is some amazing talent out there,” she said. “The focus is on producing art work and learning whatever it is you want to do. “We are happy about restarting the children’s classes which brought so much joy to the children and the membership.” Long said when joining HARTS he felt like he had found his “thing” and his people. “It is very therapeutic for me. It’s a form of meditation. It stills the mind and you are absolutely in the present moment,” he said. “You are in the company of others who you learn from. You can work by yourself as most of us tend to do but you can learn so much from others too.” Long said if anyone wanted to develop their artistic talents they could ring either Dorothy Burt (0275994466) or Neil Perfect (0276443515), who were available with advice on the best way to get started.
