Knitters gather for special day
The Saturday, June 12 is Worldwide Knit in Public Day. From 10am to 2pm knitters of all ages are invited to the Cozy Corner in Suncourt Plaza to relax with others. They can bring their own knitting project or join in making squares towards a community blanket for a local charity. People can bring yarn and knitting needles and they be given guidance on getting started. There will be a few balls of wool and needles available too for passersby to join in. Organiser Laura Dawson is aware there are several groups of knitters who meet regularly. Laura encourages them to look into the Cozy Corner for as long as they want to on the day. Unfinished squares can be taken away and dropped into the Cozy Corner until the end of June after which the Taupo¯ Creative Fibre group will join the squares to make donated blankets. Laura says Worldwide Knit in Public Day is for all ages and knitting is “not just for grannies” but a way to create something lovely, to promote social change, and to spend some happy downtime.
